Hardtail or Full Suspension?
Travel, weight, budget – which mountain bike concept fits your riding? We answer all questions.
What is what?
A hardtail has only a suspension fork at the front – the rear is rigid. A fully (full suspension) additionally has rear suspension. It sounds simple but has massive impact on ride feel, weight and price.
| Hardtail | Fully | |
|---|---|---|
| Travel | 80–130 mm (front only) | 100–180 mm (front + rear) |
| Weight | 10–13 kg | 12–16 kg |
| Price | from approx. €800 | from approx. €1,800 |
| Maintenance | Low – no shock | More – shock service needed |
| Ideal for | XC, tours, beginners | Trail, enduro, technical terrain |
When hardtail?
A hardtail is perfect for beginners, cross-country riders and everyone wanting a light, low-maintenance bike. On forest roads, easy trails and for tours, a hardtail is more than enough. Plus: for the same budget you get significantly better components than on a fully.
When fully?
As soon as roots, rocks and drops become your daily terrain, a fully shows its strengths. Rear suspension brings more traction, comfort and control in rough terrain. For enduro, trail riding and bike parks, a fully is almost mandatory.
Start with a good hardtail (€1,000–1,500) and ride it for a season. This way you learn riding technique, discover what you like, and can choose more specifically for your next bike.
